It is not just a box swap
Modern protective devices can reveal faults that an older arrangement did not detect. Pre-upgrade checks help identify circuit issues, earthing needs and access problems before the planned change.
What to discuss
Share any history of tripping, previous extensions, outdoor supplies, electric heating, EV plans or renewable-energy plans. They can affect both layout and future capacity.
- Circuit labelling
- RCD or RCBO arrangement
- Surge-protection assessment
- Space for future circuits
- Expected isolation time
After the upgrade
The completed installation should be tested, labelled and supported by the appropriate electrical certification. Keep that documentation with the property records.
Think beyond today
An extension, EV charger, electric heating or renewable system can change the best arrangement. Share realistic future plans while the distribution layout is being considered.
Records to keep
Retain the electrical certificate, circuit schedule and any test information with the property file. Accurate labels are part of the handover, not decoration.
Do not work on live electrical equipment. If there is smoke, fire, a burning smell or immediate danger, keep clear, isolate only if safe and contact the emergency services where appropriate.
